Job Update

Just an update for everyone. I had an interview with WSI Thailand last week. It went well. I am not for sure hired...yet. Basically, the guy said I was on the top of the list, I just have to go through the process. So I have a second interview next week! It looks promising. I will be making a good living for Thailand, which is great.

Also I will have an interview with a recruiting agency called Reach to Teach next week. They place teachers in Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, and China. I am hoping to be place in one of the first to if they decide I am a good candidate. The good thing about this agency is that they only place teachers in positions that work with children. I went into teaching so I could teach children, so...

But Thailand would be so awesome! It will be a difficult decision.

Oh and also, Thailand will need me there the second Monday of December, and the agency could find me a job starting a little later, around January probably. So another choice to make there.

Sad Announcement

Today I got some news... I will not be teaching in Indonesia this January. It seems that the Indonesian government put in some new restrictions for ESL teachers coming into the country. This change must not have occurred to long ago, because when I sent in all my documentation to Wall Street Institute (WSI) these restrictions were not yet in place. What are these restrictions that have led to this horrific incident you ask? (Its really not that horrific, hehe) The Indonesian government is now only accepting Visa applications for English Teachers who: have a degree in either English, Modern Languages, ESL, Education, and Linguistics. Don't you have an Education degree Denise? No. What I have is a Religious Studies degree with a minor in Education. Previously this was good enough, but not anymore. And yes I realize that to most people a Religious Studies degree sounds ridiculous. What can you do with a degree like that? Not a whole lot. Maybe become the next Prof. Langdon, or have my own TV show on Discovery Civilization (hahaha).  The purpose of the pointless degree was just to get me through a 3yr BA so that I could move on to the After-Degree program for Education at Concordia. What is that? Its something similar to a Masters program. Why they don't just call it a Masters program, I don't know. Anyway, the gist of the story is that my degree just doesn't cut it for the Indonesian government. Fortunately, however, a kind gentleman from WSI Indonesia, has sent my CV along with a reference letter to some of his contacts and other WSI schools around the world, and hopefully I will have a job offer in the next week or so. On that note, lets us all keep our fingers crossed, and wish me luck. I will update my progress on here.

Impatient People

Now that I am actually working in the customer service industry ( yes that is the nice way of me say that I am a cashier), I realize just how impatient people really are. Today I was manning the self check out, and you would not believe how angry some people get. Which brings me to two points. First, people have become so dependent on machines that they assume they are faster, smarter, and less capable of making mistakes. On top of this people have become so anti-social in this world filled with technology that they prefer the machines to human beings because that way they dont have to talk to a person. I find this a sad truth, so I vow to always use a cashier over a self checkout machine. Secondly, why are people always in such a rush? They are always needing to get somewhere and God forbid something disrupts their fast-paced lifestyles. I can't rag on them too much because I am also guilty of being in a rush from time to time. The difference, however, is that I would never take it out on anyone around me. It's not their fault that I am in a rush. So I guess the point of my rant, is don't take your frustrations out on your cashier. When she smiles and asks you how your day is going, smile back at her/him and say "not to bad, yours?" Its the common courtesy way of going through a cashier. And if you choose the self checkout, remember, they can have malfunctions, just like people can screw up, and if you hate them as much as you say, just go through the f**king cashier line. Stop complaining.

Thank you

Sick day

I figured that since I am sick and in bed I should write another post. Sorry it has taken me so long but my reasons are two-fold. Firstly, I have been super busy! I am working two jobs right now, therefore I am working approx. 50 hrs a week. And in the last couple weeks, if I havent been working, I was helping a friend move or helping another friend pick lice out of her siblings hair because her mom was out of town. I dont want this to sound like I am complaining because I really dont mind helping my friends, it actually makes me feel really good that I can help. I believe, however,  that it is because I havent taken anytime for myself that I have become sick. Speaking of being sick, I feel even more stuffed up today than yesterday, and I cant hear out of my right ear because of blowing my nose so hard. I know my mom is reading this and saying "well if you had stayed home all day yesterday, or been home and in bed earlier then you would be feeling better." And mom you may be right but I did get over 9 hrs of sleep both last night and the night before, and I have been taking the meds, and all I did while I was gone was sit on a couch and watch movies. If I had stayed home I would have done the exact same thing. Oh my reasons for not writing...oops. Secondly, I have had nothing interesting happen to me lately. Surprising I know, but it's true. Well I best be off. I have to get ready for work. I cant call in sick again. Maybe if im lucky they will send me home early. But I wont count on it.

Peace,

Denise
